The m ajor subtext-  that teenag e girls were maturi ng more quic kly than befo re, and develo ping full sexual an d roman tic appetites ( even if in though t rather t han deed)  but were n ot possessed of enough disc retion to  make the right choices- was a step for ward for a g enre in whi ch its young f emales had previously bee n portra yed as bimbo vi ctims (Cover Gi rl Kill er and Th e Night Calle r spring to m ind), b ut not  one that all vi ewers would  necessarily  agree with. Bu t most strik ing of all,  and possibly t he most endu ring image whic h the v iewer w ill take away w ith them, is of the master ful symboli sm with whic h direc tor Greene  invests e very shot.  Every in ch of the Kinc h family&# 39;s world- their house , thei r walls , their TV,  Agutters u nderwear, be droom furnit ure and toys,  Sutcliff e's clothes, Mars halls van,  the local Cat holic church,  their town centre, their record  shop) - is p ainted a bright,  scintillating white-  a white  which, b y inference, i s slowly becomi ng smudged  and corrupted  with the dirt of the o utside worl d. White also symbol ises, of  course, pur ity and innoce nce (two q ualities Catho lic scho olgirls are supposed to ho ld dear), and it is  into this wor ld of innocence that t he ever-pr esent red b us (a symbol of violat ion and penetration ), conduc ted by the lec herous yet  similarly juvenile Si mon Ward,  makes regul ar journeys.
